How to Enter

To become a Quality Engineer in New Zealand, it’s recommended that you first gain a relevant qualification in engineering, such a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil Engineering) or a Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Mechanical Engineering). However, to stand out as a great candidate, possessing a few years’ work experience within the Oil & Gas industry is equally as important as having qualifications.

Typical Responsibilities

The typical job responsibilities of a QA Engineer can include any of the following:

Using equipment to carry out site inspections to ensure quality, health and regulatory standards are met
Understanding quality control and assurance concepts, processes and procedures
Conducting preliminary and final inspection checks
Auditing, updating and implementing company quality assurance systems
Taking inspection samples to measure chemical characteristics against specified requirements
Creating and updating quality assurance records

Progression

Working in Quality Control and Assurance can open several doors to various other industries later in your career, including Manufacturing, FMCG, Construction or Engineering. Alternatively, QA Engineers who stay in the Oil & Gas industry can progress their careers towards other roles in Quality Control, such as a Reliability Engineer or Piping Inspector. Once possessing extensive industry experience, many professions can go on to move into senior management or executive-level roles.
