How to Enter

Although in most cases, there are no specific educational entry requirements for becoming a Plant Operator, New Zealand employers prefer candidates who either have on-the-job industry experience or have prepared themselves by undergoing a pre-employment Certificate in Process Operations.

The personal requirements of a Plant Operator can include any of the following:

Safety-conscious
Great communicator
Can follow instructions
Great at making judgements
Good at analysing and solving problems
Pragmatic and efficient
Highly accurate with a great attention to detail

Typical Responsibilities

Plant Operators can expect to do some or all of the following job responsibilities on any given day:

Using, maintaining and monitoring equipment that processes chemicals, natural gases and petroleum products
Adjusting equipment to ensure chemical plant is operating safely and efficiently
Recording temperature readings and equipment pressure
Making requests for equipment maintenance and repairs

Progression

Following significant on-the-job training, Plant Operators can often move into supervisory or managerial positions. Plant Operators can also progress into Panel Operator roles where they monitor and control a plant’s production and equipment from a control room.
