Although in most cases, there are no specific educational entry requirements for becoming a Plant Operator, New Zealand employers prefer candidates who either have on-the-job industry experience or have prepared themselves by undergoing a pre-employment Certificate in Process Operations.

Following significant on-the-job training, Plant Operators can often move into supervisory or managerial positions. Plant Operators can also progress into Panel Operator roles where they monitor and control a plant’s production and equipment from a control room.
