How to Enter

Due to complex nature of a Petroleum Engineer’s role, many New Zealand employers look for candidates who hold a Bachelor of Engineering, specialising in either Chemical, Materials and Process Engineering or Natural Resources.

Typical Responsibilities

The typical job responsibilities of a Petroleum Engineer can often include any of the following:

Researching and developing ways to improve factory and chemical processes, such as methods of removing impurities in fuels
Developing and researching new production materials and procedures
Monitoring, reporting and reducing the environment impact of factory processes
Creating reports and proposals for factory costs, efficiency and improvements
Overseeing technicians and factory operation staff

Progression

Many Petroleum Engineers can progress their careers by moving into management or Project Management positions after a few years’ experience. However, once they have become an expert in Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineers can also become consultants at engineering consultancies or lecturers at polytechnics and universities.
