How to Enter

The role of an Industrial Electrician can be dangerous and complex, so it’s highly recommended to complete an apprenticeship and obtain a National Certificate in Electrical Engineering – Electrician for Registration (Level 4) or a National Certificate in Electricity Supply – Electrician (Level 4). In addition, you will also need to be registered with the Electrical Workers Registration Board and have a current practicing licence.

Typical Responsibilities

The typical job responsibilities of an Industrial Electrician can include any of the following:

Interpreting writing and floor plans of industrial buildings and factories
Fitting, repairing and replacing electrical wiring and industrial equipment
Conducting tests for electrical wiring and equipment to ensure safety and compliance
Recording all work completed and faults diagnosed
Providing quotes over planned work to customers
Dealing with customers and clients

Progression

Given time and experience, Industrial Electricians can train to become consultants at specialist construction and engineering firms later in their careers. Alternatively, they can also work their way up to management and supervise a team of trainee Electricians. Another option includes undergoing further training and passing an exam to become an Electrical Inspector.
