​How to Enter

Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) Engineers often must to conduct complicated repairs and maintenance on large and complex machinery. For that reason, New Zealand engineering firms look for candidates who hold a Diploma in Engineering, specialising in Mechanical Engineering. To further improve their employability, HVAC Engineers can then work towards completing the New Zealand Diploma in Engineering Practice to become a Certified Engineering Technician.


Typical Responsibilities

Throughout a typical working day, a HVAC Engineer might be expected to do any of the following:


  • Installing heating, ventilation and air-conditioning machinery and equipment
  • Making recommendations on how to improve HVAC machinery and equipment
  • Calculating and reporting costs
  • Providing advice on installing HVAC machinery and equipment
  • Testing and repairing HVAC equipment and machinery
  • Monitoring equipment and machines to improve mechanical processes
  • Liaising with suppliers and vendors
  • Provide advice on HVAC equipment and machinery maintenance work
  • Supervising and working with staff during installations


Progression

After a few years’ experience, HVAC Engineers can often move into supervisory or managerial roles within an Engineering firm. Alternatively, however, they can choose to become more specialist in areas that involve HVAC technology.


Salary Range

Entry: 46K – 60K per annum (NZD)

Experienced (4+ years): 60K – 80K per annum (NZD)
