How to Enter

The job of an Electrical Engineer can be dangerous and complicated, so New Zealand employers expect professionals to hold a relevant degree, such as a Bachelor of Engineering degree, to prove their competency. Alternatively, a three-year degree in Engineering Technology enables people to become an Engineering Technologist, and often work in more specialised fields.

Typical Responsibilities

The typical responsibilities of a Driver can consist of the following:

Developing and updating electrical systems and equipment
Researching and creating methods to generate, distribute and manage electricity
Calculating the costs of engineering projects and the materials needed
Creating instruction manuals for installing new electrify systems and equipment
Installing and maintaining electrical systems and equipment or supervising these installations and maintenance
Conducting and overseeing electricity system tests and correcting any faults
Writing reports on work completed

Progression

The next logical step for many Electrical Engineers is a move into management or Project Management positions. Whilst these are both fantastic career paths, other rewarding options for Engineers include becoming consultants at engineering consultation firms and moving into other areas of Engineering, such as Environmental, Mechanical or Civil.
