The job of an Electrical Engineer can be dangerous and complicated, so New Zealand employers expect professionals to hold a relevant degree, such as a Bachelor of Engineering degree, to prove their competency. Alternatively, a three-year degree in Engineering Technology enables people to become an Engineering Technologist, and often work in more specialised fields.

The next logical step for many Electrical Engineers is a move into management or Project Management positions. Whilst these are both fantastic career paths, other rewarding options for Engineers include becoming consultants at engineering consultation firms and moving into other areas of Engineering, such as Environmental, Mechanical or Civil.
