How to Enter

The job of an Electrical Engineer can be dangerous and complicated, so New Zealand engineering firms expect professionals to hold a relevant degree to prove their competency. In the case of Electrical Engineering, the four-year Bachelor of Engineering degree enables people to become a professional Engineer after completion. Alternatively, a three-year degree in Engineering Technology enables people to become an Engineering Technologist, and often work in more specialised fields.

Typical Responsibilities

The typical job responsibilities of an Electrical Engineer can include some or all the following:

Developing and updating designs for electrical systems and equipment
Developing ways to generate, distribute, and manage electricity
Designing automated and computerised methods of controlling electrical processes
Developing instruction manuals for new electrify systems and equipment
Installing and maintaining electrical systems and equipment
Calculating the costs of projects and materials
Conducting electricity system tests and resolving any faults
Writing reports on work completed

Progression

The next logical step for many Electrical Engineers is a move into management or Project Management positions. Whilst these are both fantastic career paths, other rewarding options for Engineers include becoming consultants at engineering consultation firms and moving into other areas of Engineering, such as Environmental, Mechanical or Civil.
