Civil Project Engineers often bridge the gap between Civil Infrastructure, Engineering and Project Management. For that reason, many New Zealand employers expect candidates to have experience or qualifications in both, for example, a Bachelor of Engineering, specialising in Civil Engineering and a qualification in Project Management (PMI or PRINCE2).

Typical Responsibilities

Civil Project Engineers could find themselves conducting any of the following on a daily basis:

• Forecasting and planning engineering resources and activities for projects involving roads, bridges, buildings, sewerage plants and other structures
• Liaising between project management and Civil Engineering teams
• Managing performance of third-party vendors and suppliers
• Calculating and reporting financial costs of Civil construction and engineering projects
• Managing quality control processes
• Reporting, discussing and resolving problems with engineers
• Provide training to Civil Engineering team when required

Progression

Civil Project Engineers who are willing to continue learning can take their career far, from further specialising in areas such as waste water, earthworks or road engineering, to moving further into Project Management. In some cases, they can also move into Engineering Resource Planning, Budget Estimation or Health and Safety.
