A Transmission Line Engineer in New Zealand is responsible for designing, planning, and overseeing the construction and maintenance of high-voltage power transmission lines across the country, including tasks like route selection, tower design, foundation engineering, environmental impact assessment, and compliance with relevant regulations, typically working on projects ranging from 33kV to 500kV throughout Aotearoa New Zealand. 

Key Responsibilities:

• Project Design:
• Conduct feasibility studies for new transmission line projects, including route optimisation and environmental impact analysis. 
• Design and model transmission line structures, including towers and foundations, considering terrain and load requirements. 
• Develop detailed engineering drawings and specifications for construction. 
• Technical Analysis:
• Perform electrical load calculations and power flow analysis to ensure system stability. 
• Analyze existing transmission lines for potential upgrades or replacements. 
• Conduct short circuit studies and fault analysis to ensure safety and reliability. 
• Construction Management:
• Oversee the construction process, including contractor management and quality control. 
• Monitor project timelines and budgets. 
• Coordinate with relevant stakeholders like landowners, local authorities, and environmental agencies. 
• Maintenance and Operations:
• Develop and implement maintenance plans for existing transmission lines. 
• Investigate and troubleshoot faults on the transmission network. 
• Conduct inspections of transmission towers and lines to ensure compliance with safety standards. 

Required Skills and Qualifications:

• Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with a focus on power systems. 
• Technical Expertise:
• Proficiency in transmission line design software (e.g., PLS-CADD) 
• Knowledge of electrical power systems, including AC power transmission theory, power flow analysis, and fault calculations 
• Understanding of relevant New Zealand electrical standards and regulations
