A "Network Controller" in New Zealand primarily refers to a role within the electricity distribution industry, responsible for real-time monitoring and control of the power grid, coordinating responses to planned outages, fault restoration, and emergency situations, ensuring the safety of personnel, protection of assets, and reliable electricity supply across the network, often utilizing specialized software applications to manage complex switching operations and communication with field crews; essentially acting as the "command center" for network operations. 


Key responsibilities of a Network Controller in New Zealand:

  • Monitoring network status:
  • Continuously monitoring the electricity network using SCADA systems to identify potential issues, fault detection, and voltage fluctuations. 
  • Responding to emergencies:
  • Taking immediate action during power outages, faults, or other disruptions to restore service quickly and safely. 
  • Coordinating field operations:
  • Communicating with field crews to direct switching operations, isolation procedures, and necessary repairs. 
  • Planned outage management:
  • Managing planned maintenance activities, coordinating with customers and contractors to minimize disruption. 
  • Safety compliance:
  • Adhering to strict safety protocols and procedures related to high voltage operations. 
  • Switch writing:
  • Preparing and verifying switching instructions for complex network maneuvers. 
  • Data analysis:
  • Utilizing network data to analyze trends, identify potential problems, and optimize operations 


Required skills and qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of electricity distribution networks, including protection systems and substation operations 
  • Technical proficiency with SCADA systems and other network management tools 
  • Excellent decision-making abilities under pressure, particularly during emergency situations 
  • Strong communication skills to effectively coordinate with field crews and stakeholders 
  • Electrical engineering background or relevant industry experience
