A laboratory technician in New Zealand is responsible for preparing and analyzing samples in a laboratory setting, performing tests using specialized equipment, recording data, maintaining laboratory cleanliness, and ensuring proper calibration of equipment, often under the supervision of a scientist, with specific roles like medical laboratory technicians focusing on analyzing bodily fluids like blood and urine for diagnostic purposes; requiring adherence to strict safety protocols and accurate documentation of results. 


Key responsibilities may include:



  • Sample preparation: Collecting, labeling, and preparing samples for analysis. 
  • Performing tests: Operating laboratory equipment like microscopes, automated analyzers to conduct tests on samples according to established protocols. 
  • Data recording: Accurately documenting results of tests in laboratory information systems. 
  • Quality control: Monitoring and maintaining the accuracy of equipment through calibration and quality checks. 
  • Laboratory maintenance: Keeping the lab clean, organized, and stocked with necessary supplies. 
  • Safety compliance: Following strict laboratory safety procedures and regulations. 
  • Reporting results: Communicating test results to relevant personnel in a timely and accurate manner. 


Specializations in New Zealand:

  • Medical Laboratory Technician: Analyzing blood, urine, tissue, and other bodily fluids for diagnosis of diseases. 
  • Environmental Laboratory Technician: Testing water, soil, and air samples for environmental contaminants. 
  • Food Laboratory Technician: Analyzing food products for quality and safety
