To enter a Traffic Engineering job in New Zealand, we recommend that you first complete a Bachelor of Engineering Technology, specialising in Civil Engineering – Roading and Transportation, or a Bachelor of Engineering, specialising in Traffic Planning and Highway Design.

Typical Responsibilities

• Planning transportation networks, such as roads, highways and streets
• Using computer simulation programs to explore potential impact of proposed traffic development projects
• Running simulations to identify the impact of changing traffic light timings and intersection layouts
• Running simulations for potential traffic and natural disasters, such as earthquakes
• Using simulation data to plan amendments to transportation networks
• Planning and supervising the repairing of roads
• Reviewing plans for commercial or residential developments and their potential impact of transportation networks

Progression

The next logical step for many Traffic Engineers is to specialise further in Transportation Management and continue progressing their careers in Civil Infrastructure. However, this also opens the door to many other areas of Civil Engineering, including Urban Planning and Surveying.
