A plumber in New Zealand is a licensed tradesperson responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing plumbing systems in residential and commercial buildings, including pipes, fittings, drains, hot water systems, and fixtures like toilets, sinks, and basins; they must be registered with the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board and may also perform gasfitting and drainlaying work, requiring them to measure, cut, join pipes, and obtain necessary council consents to carry out work on water, sewerage, and gas lines. 


Key responsibilities of a plumber in New Zealand:

  • Installation:
  • Installing new plumbing systems in new construction projects, including pipes, fittings, drains, and fixtures. 
  • Maintenance:
  • Performing regular inspections and maintenance on existing plumbing systems to prevent leaks and ensure proper functionality. 
  • Repair:
  • Diagnosing and fixing plumbing issues like leaks, blockages, faulty fixtures, and damaged pipes. 
  • Gasfitting:
  • Installing and servicing gas appliances and lines, depending on their license and qualifications. 
  • Drainlaying:
  • Installing and repairing drainage systems including sewer lines. 
  • Compliance:
  • Adhering to local building codes and regulations, obtaining necessary permits, and ensuring work meets safety standards. 


Required skills and qualifications:

  • Apprenticeship completion: Completing a recognized plumbing apprenticeship to gain the necessary practical skills and theoretical knowledge. 
  • Registration with the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board: Obtaining a license to legally practice plumbing in New Zealand. 
  • Technical knowledge: Understanding of plumbing systems, pipe materials, fittings, and tools. 
  • Problem-solving abilities: Diagnosing and troubleshooting plumbing issues efficiently. 
  • Physical fitness: Ability to work in confined spaces, lift heavy objects, and perform physically demanding tasks.
