The job of an Environmental Engineer requires expert-level knowledge of theoretical and technical engineering. For that reason, New Zealand employers look for candidates who possess either a Bachelor of Engineering or a Bachelor of Engineering Technology, specialising in Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering.

Typical Responsibilities

• Evaluating the environmental impact of planned engineering and construction projects
• Advising how to minimise environmental impact
• Preparing reports, sketches, working drawings and specifications based on the project sites and the clients’ needs
• Managing projects from inception to completion
• Designing waste-management systems
• Periodically testing air, water, and land samples for pollution
• Advising on pollution treatment methods
• Supervising any contractors who are carrying out work

Progression

Environmental Engineers can progress their careers by moving into managerial roles and even work their way up to executive-level in an Engineering firm. They can also become self-employed contractors. Alternatively, Engineers can continue to specialist in other areas such as Project Management, Construction Management, Health and Safety, Planning, Estimation and Environmental Science.
