To stand out as a qualified Electrician to most Trade & Industrial employers in New Zealand, you will need to complete an apprenticeship and obtain a National Certificate in Electrical Engineering – Electrician for Registration (Level 4) or a National Certificate in Electricity Supply – Electrician (Level 4). In addition, you will also need to be registered with the Electrical Workers Registration Board and have a current practicing licence.

Typical Responsibilities

• Interpreting writing and floor plans
• Fitting, repairing and replacing electrical wiring and equipment
• Conducting tests for electrical wiring and equipment to ensure safety and compliance
• Recording all work completed and faults diagnosed
• Providing quotes over planned work to customers
• Dealing with customers and clients

Progression

Given time and experience, Electricians can train to become consultants at specialist construction and engineering firms later in their careers. Alternatively, they can also work their way up to management and supervise a team of trainee Electricians. Another option includes undergoing further training and passing an exam to become an Electrical Inspector.
