To secure a job as an Electrical Engineer in the Rail and Transportation industry, New Zealand employers expect you to hold a four-year Bachelor of Engineering or three-year Bachelor of Engineering Technology degree to prove competency.

Typical Responsibilities

• Developing and updating designs for electrical systems and equipment
• Developing ways to generate, distribute, and manage electricity
• Designing automated and computerised methods of controlling electrical processes
• Developing instruction manuals for new electrify systems and equipment
• Installing and maintaining electrical systems and equipment
• Calculating the costs of projects and materials
• Conducting electricity system tests and resolving any faults
• Writing reports on work completed

Progression

The next logical step for many Electrical Engineers is a move into management or project management positions. Whilst these are both fantastic career paths, other rewarding options for engineers include becoming consultants at engineering consultation firms and moving into other areas of engineering, such as Environmental, Mechanical or Civil.
