full-time study to complete. Once on the job, a Building Services Engineer can work towards completing the New Zealand Diploma in Engineering Practice (NZDEP), which leads to a certification as an Engineering Technician with the Institution of Professional Engineers of NZ.


Typical Responsibilities

  • Overseeing the installing and maintenance of building machinery, such as ventilation, heating and air-conditioning units
  • Making recommendations on how to improve machinery
  • Calculating costs and amount of equipment required
  • Providing advice on installing equipment and machinery
  • Testing and monitoring building equipment and machinery
  • Preparing contracts and contacting suppliers and vendors
  • Planning and providing advice on building equipment and machinery maintenance work
  • Supervising and working with staff on site or at power and manufacturing plants


Progression

With hard work and determination, Building Services Engineers can progress towards supervisory roles with relative ease. However, these Engineers can also choose to further specialise in areas such as Air-conditioning, Heating and Ventilation, Manufacturing, Heavy Machinery and Power Generation.
